Our
Philosophy
Rhythms & Soul is a
user friendly dance studio whose goal is to teach students the art of social
partner dancing by perfecting their basic steps and technique in a
non-competitive, positive atmosphere. Our objective is not only to teach dance
but to build the students’ confidence by implementing a step by step program
which allows participants to experience a sense of accomplishment as well as
expand their dance skills and fulfill their desired aspirations.
When a potential student inquires about classes, it is difficult to determine
dance level. Therefore, we suggest that new students take advantage of our
introductory special. The Intro Special includes one 30 minute private lesson
and one group class. This gives the student a chance to get acquainted with the
studio and it gives the studio a chance to determine which type of program is
best for that individual.
In general it takes a
new student four to six months of consistent weekly attendance to advance from
one level to the next. Students are asked to respect themselves as well as
their fellow dancers by attending the class which is appropriate for their dance
level.
Some students,
although beginner, grasp new concepts quickly. These people would therefore be
comfortable in a beginner group class. Other individuals require more attention
and we will suggest private lessons for a period of time, before entering a
group, in order to prevent the student from becoming frustrated. Whenever
possible, we like to recommend students take a combination of group and private
lessons because it broadens their dance knowledge, helps them polish their dance
skills and fosters camaraderie with fellow students and our supportive staff.
About the owner:
Kelly
Ficarra is the owner of Rhythms & Soul Dance Studio located in Levittown and
Forest Hills, NY . Having danced and taught dancing for many
years,
Kelly decided to turn her passion into a business in 2006 when she opened her
Levittown studio. Her goal was to create a dance studio for adults where the
atmosphere welcomed even those with two left feet and the curriculum allowed for
drop in visits without signing up for long, multi-week courses. Realizing that
most of the area dance studios were ballroom oriented, Kelly decided to offer
classes that she termed as “user friendly”. Because her expertise was teaching
and performing club-style Salsa that was priority on the list and Rhythms & Soul
began offering some of the first classes in On2 Salsa in Long Island. Those
classes were quickly followed by Zumba classes, Hip Hop for adults and even a
Pole Dance Workout class.
In early 2008, Rhythms & Soul
doubled the size Levittown location to include the store unit next door. In
December of 2009, Kelly expanded her studio to include a second location in
Forest Hills, NY. The unique aspect of this still small business is that it
works like a franchise. Clients are able to redeem their classes at either
studio location. They have the ability to buy and register for classes online
as well as manage their own studio accounts. This innovative way of doing
business has proved to be revolutionary and has also been the role model of many
new area dance studios.
Rhythms & Soul Dance Studio has been featured on: MTV's "MADE", News 12 Long
Island, Cablevision’s “Spotlight on Long Island” and also in Newsday; The
Neighbor Newspaper; The Rhythm Express; The Levittown Tribune; The North Shore
Herald, Salsa and More Magazine; Forest Hills Ledger and the Queens Courier.
The studio was voted 2009 Best of Long Island in the Long Island Press. Kelly
has twice been a featured in the Long Island Business News.
