The
Healing Dancer...
by Dorie Valentin, RYT ***www.lotusvibe.com***
Some of you may recall my previous article,
Finding the
Rhythm...Encountering Your Soul... featured as the
premier article for Rhythms and Soul.
Well, here we are preparing our Salsa Souls for Spring and unfortunately at
the peak of the dancing season, where our spirits can find freedom in the dance
and our body can become the beat of the drum, I find myself in the stillness of
the rhythm.
It all began on the morning that I was scheduled to fly out to South Beach,
Miami for a Master Workshop with Beto Perez, creator of the Zumba Fitness
Workout. Music blasting in my head, excitement running through my veins and the
pulse of our hot latin sounds quivered through my spirit as I prepared for this
memorable workshop. Then, I slipped...Yes, I slipped. I did not slip, On The
1...or...On The 2. I flat out slipped, heard a crack in my ankle, and
immediately felt a sense of sadness. You see, it was that morning that I broke
my ankle. Specifically the Distal Fibula, which is the smaller bone in the lower
leg that helps to support the foundation of the body.
How can this be? I cried, I questioned...I felt lost. What would I do if I
can't dance. Sounds silly, right? -it's just dancing, right? How can the power
of dancing be so important that it could appear to change my more immediate
future. Well, I've got news for you...it is the power of the dance and the
meditation of the music that heals you.
I bet you think I did not go to the Master Workshop in Miami that day,
huh...well I've got news for you my fellow salsa spirits - I DID. Put that cast
on me quickly, get me some crutches, and a wheelchair and luckily a first class
seat on the plane, I am there! My choice was to stay home and be saddened by
this OR sit back during the workshop and experience it the best way I could. -
be around like minded people.
Having a cast, crutches and being crushed at a very important time in my life
is unacceptable. So, I sit back, watch dancing videos, listen to latin flava,
writeout choreography and work with my egg shakers to improve my ear training
for the beat. I've tapped into a way of teaching without actually having to
perform the moves but to fine tune my verbal instruction. The dancer spirit
never sleeps.
Even now, writing this...my salsa music bounces off the walls, my good leg is
tapping, my shoulders and upper back are moving (yes trying to match Kelly's
moves----how does she do some of those fabulous body moves?)...anyhoo, my
friends, I am the healing dancer and I encourage you to take your egg shakers
and perfect your timing, listen to the music and get to know it very well, get
yourself ready to be the best dancer you were meant to be and keep your spirit
energized by the upcoming Master Workshop with Angel Ortiz and Latin Music
Workshop.
Estoy bailando siempre, Dorie
